A new site put Veld Architects’ finished houses before the practice’s philosophy, and four years on it was judged South Africa’s best architecture website.

Brief

Veld Architects designs sustainable homes. Its old site opened on the practice’s philosophy, and visitors had to read their way to twenty years of finished houses.

One house’s page: a full-width photograph first, the architect’s reasoning further down.

Approach

  • A page per house

Each finished house was given its own page, opening on a full-width photograph.

  • Reasoning below

The thinking behind each house was set further down the page.

The site open on a tablet in a stone-walled living room, a fire lit.
The site’s colours and type: slate, veld green and bushveld on warm white, Roboto Condensed.
Dry grassland at golden hour: the South African veld the practice is named after.
The site on three phones side by side: the home page, the projects page and one house’s page.

Result

The site launched in 2020, and in 2024 the African Property Awards named it the best architecture website in South Africa.
